  • Design

Since the inception of Kalinga Silk the weavers of these traditional hand woven textiles use ikat designs on vibrant colours of the silk weaves . They created natural images of flora and fauna with geometrical patterns on the weaves. “Temple” and “Rudrakhsa’ motifs and designs on the “dadhi” (borders) as well as "kani” (pallu) are still added to give a modern touch to the traditional silk weaves

  • Material

Pure Silk handlooms of India, especially of Odhisa are weaves of simple lattice, which are yarn threads closely placed to each other. This widely preferred silk is a soft, smooth textured, light – weight , air and material of sheer comfort in the humid weathers of the state. Get a glimpse of exclusivity, softness and comfort through Kalinga Silk from the online ethnic store of Kiukart.

  • Origin

Kalinga silk established itself , when Radadhashyam Meher formed his propriety concern known as “Utkal Parda Agency”, at Samabalpur for the purpose of research , production and marketing of the textiles. However the origin of these textiles is marked since the development of Vaishnav cult. They got a new identify blent with Bengali weaving technique along with the beautiful thread work on it.

  • Thread Count

The process of single count untwisted silk is tedious. Usually 40s, 60s and 80s single count silk and 2/80s mercerized silk is used in the making of Kalinga silk saree.

  • Weaving

The process of winding, drafting, denting, weaving and spinning weft thread is an ongoing three week process in the making of these Kalinga silk sarees. The ancient crafting tradition however was the “Bandhakala” method. This is the tie and die art which is still depicted in the beautiful silk weaves of Orissa. The threads are first tied and died and then woven into fabric like Kalinga Silk

  • Dyeing

The unbleached threads or yarns are scoured, bleached and dyed in desired color. The Kalinga silk fabric is dipped into colourful patterns and then tied with threads before the cloth is weaved.
